Being in the kitchen all day, we’re lucky that despite the heat from the ovens and cooktops, we’re very sheltered from the outside elements. It doesn’t matter if it’s -3 degrees and raining outside, or 40 and sweltering, the kitchen environment doesn’t really change (okay, it does get hot, but we’re used to it).
As it starts to warm up, I think about all the tradies and kids being outdoors in our harsh summers. It’s a well known fact that Australia has the highest number of reported melanomas in the world. That is why it is so important to remember to apply sunscreen and wear protective clothing when outdoors for any length of time during our warmer months.
13,941 new cases of melanoma are expected to be reported in Australia for 2017 alone. With our students outside training for a large portion of the day, it is our responsibility to remind them to apply sunscreen. We all know too well how easy it is to get blasé about being sun smart. 2017 is already shaping up to be one of the driest and hottest on record, so let’s try to remind this generation of the “slip slop slap” of the 90’s so we can drive down melanoma numbers and ensure our kids can live long and healthy lives.
